Australia’s First Civil Law Suit”

Henry and Susannah were the first people to institute and win a Civil Law Suit against the establishment------------------ “Cable v Sinclair” as the case was known at that time.  Henry decided to change his name to Kable in the early days of the colony but not all records showed that change.

“This Law Suit was an action against Captain Duncan Sinclair of the “Alexander” for value of goods lost from a gift parcel on the voyage Henry and Susannah won this case and received $15 compensation. He could then start up in business.  He was to be the first or among the first to be granted an absolute pardon.”

Susannah Kable was named “one of the 100 most influential Australians of all time” by The Bulletin magazine, January, 2006. This was because the court case represented the precedent for all Australian Law. Usually Henry gets all the credit but not so in this list.
